Come to Our Life Stories, a cross-generational writers’ conference, focused on collecting and writing your family stories, April 22, 2017.
Please join us at Cosumnes River College (CRC) for the tenth-anniversary Our Life Stories writers’ conference. We will feature nationally-recognized writers on Saturday, April 22, 2017, 1PM to 5PM.
Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist and essayist Jack Ohman, poet and short story writer James Cagney, and comedienne Allison Page will speak on the intersection of humor and memoir at the tenth-annual Our Life Stories writers’ conference Saturday, April 22, at Cosumnes River College, in Sacramento. The conference will focus on memoir writing (particularly family stories) with an emphasis on humor. The event also includes a catered reception and resource fair. All writers are welcome.
The event, sponsored by the City of Sacramento’s Hart Senior Center and CRC, runs from 1PM to 5PM. The conference fee is $25, and registration is required by Friday, April 21st. Space is limited! About Jack Hamilton Ohman
Since 2013, Jack Hamilton Ohman has been the editorial cartoonist and Associate Editor at The Sacramento Bee, where he draws five cartoons per week, in addition to a Sunday column. He also writes editorials. He previously worked at The Columbus Dispatch from 1981-1982, and then at the Detroit Free Press from 1982-1983. He then went to The Oregonian, where he worked until 2012.
His work is syndicated to 200 newspapers through Tribune Content Agency. When he signed with the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate in 1980, he was the youngest-ever nationally syndicated cartoonist at age 19. Ohman won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize, and he was a finalist in 2012. He has also won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Scripps Howard Award, the National Headliner Award, the Overseas Press Club Award, and two first place Best of The West Awards. He was a finalist for the Herblock Prize in 2013.
Ohman is the author of ten books, four on the subject of fly fishing. He did freelance artwork for ABC News Nightline from 1984-1985. He drew the comic strip Mixed Media, which appeared in 170 newspapers, from 1994-1998. He was a regular contributor to Foreign Policy Magazine from 1994-1998.
About James Cagney
James Cagney is a poet and writer from Oakland. Since 1995, Cagney has appeared as a featured poet at venues in San Francisco, Vancouver, Sacramento, Chicago, and Mumbai. Over the years he has performed at countless readings series including (but not limited to) the East Bay Beast Crawl, San Francisco Litquake, Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco Public Library, and Masonic Auditorium. About Allison Page
Allison Page is a writer/actor/playwright/Artistic Director of San Francisco sketch comedy company Killing My Lobster. She is originally from northern, rural Minnesota, has been in the Bay Area for eight years, and spent most of her early 20s as a hairstylist trimming mullets in a Walmart. Her writing has been featured in Women of Letters, Write Club SF, Shipwreck, The SF Olympians Festival, SF Theater Pub and others. Her published works include HILARITY, a full length drama about comedy, and an autobiographical piece in Airmail: Women of Letters from Penguin Australia. Her commissioned full length play KILGALLEN/JONES will have its world premiere in San Francisco at the EXIT Theatre in March 2017. She is fascinated and terrified by politics.
